Today, Thursday August 9th, I heard the news by chance from Philomena Kissane that dear Morty Cohen had passed away. I am so sorry, so very, very, sorry about his passing and that I didn't know about it and therefore did not attend the funeral. Please forgive me. I certainly would have attended. Morty was and will always be a fixture of my childhood memories growing up in Monticello. You all knew my dad, Gus Gavis (Dr. Gavis), and how much Dad enjoyed talking with Morty at the garage or anywhere, actually. Gosh, I have so many childhood memories of going to that Gulf station for gas with my Dad and having a friendly chat myself with Morty. I remember all the repairs on all of our cars through the years, and how only the great Morty Cohen really knew what he was doing. I know he was an engineer, right? I remember Morty's kindness and generosity of spirit, always lending my dad a hand especially when it was bad weather, snowing impossibly hard, and Dad could not get out of our driveway to get to the hospital to see a sick child....It was Morty to the rescue with his big truck that had those big chains around the tires enabling him to get through snow like a tank. Dad was always grateful for Morty's help. Always. Even in his later years. My husband Goddard (Dr. Lainjo) also had the privilege of meeting Morty and I think you were there too, Mitchell, a few years ago....
So, today I drove up to Monticello and made that hairpin turn up West Broadway onto Varnell Road. I thought of Morty at the turn and honestly, I wondered if he was at the garage today....but I was rushing to my house for an appointment. The thing is, I have always thought of Morty through the years whenever making that turn...and I guess now I always will. That Gulf station was more than just a gas station repair shop. It was a special place run by a very special man.
Sending you all our love and heartfelt sorrow.
Wendy Gavis-Lainjo

Connie and Mitch have always been together since I can remember. I had the privilege to meet Morty at that very young age and learn how a man should take care of his family and friends. I never met anyone that could say anything negative about him and he lived his life doing what was important. He did an outstanding "job" raising 2 great children with tremendous values just like he had. The world needs more people like Morty and he will be sorely missed. God rest your sole. You did an outstanding job.

To the Cohen family - it is of a privilege that Pop Pop and your family had been a part of our life. Many times I had been at the garage and Pop Pop always found the time to ask how I was doing and engaged in conversation - always with a smile. Without realizing - his character had ingrained into my growing up. Which I am for ever grateful . Embrace the memories as Pop Pop is always there as within a part of your soul.
