Obituary of Sherryl Schwartz Morantz
Sherryl Schwartz Morantz passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2018 after a brief illness, in the presence of her loving family.
Sherryl was born in Brooklyn but raised in Harris attending a one room schoolhouse there. The family moved to Monticello where Sherryl became a cheerleader at Monti High.
She married Max Morantz in 1947 and they had three daughters, Denise, Karen and Janice and lived in one of the first houses built on Atwell Lane. She was proud of her acting at that time with the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop, especially the lead role in “Bus Stop” in the part played by Marilyn Monroe in the movie.
Later as a single Mom she raised her girls at Klein’s Bungalows on Anawana Lake Road. Sherryl worked hard to care for her girls and was a waitress at her family restaurant Schwartz’s Delicatessen before entering the art world through Todd Gallery. She managed that gallery at the Concord Hotel and with her inimitable style and grace conducted art auctions for the many guests.
She later joined Ed Weston Graphics and entered the art world of New York City. She then crossed back over the GW Bridge to work for J. Richards Gallery in Englewood, NJ.
In the early 1980s she opened S. Morantz Galleries in Cliffside Park, NJ which she ran successfully as owner-operator for the next 38 years. Art from her gallery, all framed with her impeccable taste, adorns the walls of local professionals, public officials and business leaders.
Sherryl was predeceased by her parents Judge Irving and Lillian Schwartz, and her brothers Lenny and Marty. She is survived by her sister Joan Kasofsky(Larry) and daughters Denise Rappaport (Marvin), Karen Atlas (Teddy), and Janice Sweetwater (Richard Juchniewicz) and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “G.G.” (short for Great-Grandma).
Sherryl will be remembered for her class, her taste and her gusto for art and life. She was pleased to recently return to her roots in Monticello. Sherryl brightened many a day with her upbeat and beautiful messages to her numerous Facebook friends. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and loving family.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY 12701 with Rabbi Ben-Zion Chanowitz officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery, Thompson Road, Monticello.
The family asks that donations in Sherryl’s memory be made to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, 800 Stony Brook Ct, Newburgh, NY 12550.
