Obituary of Herman M. Laufer
Herman “Hesh” M. Laufer, a long-time resident of the area passed away on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center. He was 89. The son of the late Morris and Matilda Ferber Laufer, Hesh was born on March 5, 1929 in Manhattan.
Herman was raised in Bronx and at his parents' summer hotel in Loch Sheldrake. He went on to attend Long Island University and was also a proud U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Temple Ahavath Israel Synagogue (past president), Lions International, American Legion, Free and Accepted Masons, Town of Liberty Volunteer Ambulance Corps (line officer and fund raiser), White Sulphur Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
A family statement reads: “Hesh was a Loving and devoted husband and a good friend to many, always willing to help where needed. He was interested in history, especially Civil War, World War II and the Holocaust, where some family members were lost. Hesh loved a challenge and working with numbers and he never completely retired from his profession as accountant. He could build or repair almost anything, and was not afraid to get his hands dirty. Some of his favorite things included his family, his friends, and a good political discussion, telling a good story...over and over again..., his work, boating, horses, his dogs and cats, opera, and anything with an engine.”
Survivors include his beloved wife of 26 years; Marilyn (Vasko) Laufer, brother; Sidney Laufer and his wife Roberta (Bobbie), several cousins, nieces, and nephews, in-laws Charles and Mary Vasko, and mother-in-law Vera Atkins.
A funeral service will take place on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 11:30am at the Congregation Ahavath Israel Synagogue, 39 Chestnut St, Liberty, NY 12754. Burial will immediately follow at the synagogue cemetery, Hysana Road in Liberty.
