Mr. Leshner was a wonderful educator, but more than that! He was a man who loved to help anyone who needed help. He was a real doer and not a follower. I feel honored to have known him and he was one of the inspirations that helped ME follow my path into education. RIP , Mr. Motivator

Mr. Leshner was my teacher at FCH, and was a great person. I feel honored to have him as one of my teachers at the high school, and when I came back to visit while he was still at the HS I would go and see him among other teachers I had during my time at FCSHS. He will surely be missed by all and I will let all of his other students here in Las Vegas, Nevada know of his passing. If there is anything you may need me to do for you please contact me. I am so sorry for your loss of a great person and teacher.

Mr. Leshner was a personal favorite of dozens of students in my era, the mid-1970s. His fairness, intelligence, and well balanced approach stands out in my memory, especially in contrast to today’s hyper-partisan era.

Dear Leshner Family,
I extend my deepest condolences on the loss of Mr. Leshner. He was my Social Studies Teacher at FHS, and I graduated in 1978. Mr. Leshner was like a walking encyclopedia full of so much history and he was so passionate about it. He was a kind man. I was also happy to see that he went on to teach at the college level. Mr. Leshner was a good person and I remember our class meeting in the auditorium. He taught History like a story and I loved that about him! He knew it so well and made it so interesting. When I went to college, I loved hearing others teach History like Mr. Leshner by telling a story because we are more likely to remember stories.
Your dad touched many lives at FHS.

In your life there are usually a handful of people you can point to as having been a major influence. Mr. Leshner was one of those people to me. He fed my love of history and politics. He instilled the importance of keeping an open mind in the process of learning. He helped me become a better student, better citizen and a better person. I will be forever grateful. Rest in peace, shalom, Mr. Leshner.

Mr. Leshner taught me, and most of my class, history 1962-64. But those classes – however good, however exciting and informative – are not the favorite memories I have of him. One memory was watching him as an actor in a Forestburgh Playhouse performance two decades after my graduation. After the show we went up to meet him. He knew exactly who I was and what I was doing. Another memory was a second-hand story of him told to me by a classmate. That friend had attended a party at the Leshners’ home and remarked how Mr. Leshner stood in one room and his wife in the other, each leading an animated conversation, but when one said something funny the other heard it over all the other voices and laughed. They were bound to each other, an image and a value that has stayed with me. There were the rumors about bodies (mob kills) in the lake near the Harmony Hotel; there were rumors about communist cells at the hotel. Mr. Leshner was in the Korean war, so much for communist cells, but until I read his obituary I did not know of his medals and his heroism. No rumor was as exciting as the truth about Mr. Leshner.

Jack attended last months Hall of Fame induction at which time I was inducted. To have the honor of even standing near the same level as Mr Leshner was a privilege. When my mom passed away 21 years ago Jack and many other faculty members spent a great deal of time with our family. That really meant a lot to us. Jack, you will be missed but your legacy goes on forever ! Peace be with you

Mr. Leshner was a wonderful human being and superb teacher who made history come alive, and who nurtured my life long interest in politics and history. I credit Mr. Leshner especially for making history come alive , and who was a rock of integrity during my years as a student in the early 1970s and who personified stability during the years when the student body walked in protest against the Vietnam War and as a result of the MLK and RFK assassinations, but who was equally proud of his students achievements on the SAT Achievements and AP tests and who was very respectful of my way of life and my decision to attend a Yeshiva University,

Mr. Leshner was one of the most influential teachers in my life. His classes were ones I always looked forward. He taught me the importance of citizen involvement with in government. I worked in civil service for many years and often think of him often as I am still politically active. He was a true “gentle” man. “To be remembered in the hearts of others is to live forever.” Rest In Peace Mr. Leshner. You were loved and will always be fondly remembered.

I consider Jack Leshner to be a major life influence upon me. Even though, I was only exposed to his wisdom, his wit and his person for a brief period of time while attending Fallsburg Central High School his impact was and is lifelong. To me he was a man that would not turn down a request to gain more knowledge. He took of his personal time between classes to teach me history that lives with me to this day. I am saddened to the core to know that he is no longer with us.
He was to many, and will always be, a great man to me. A man that I modeled much of my life after.

Mr. Leshner was a wonderful teacher and person. After graduating from FCS in 1961 Barry and I worked at the Harmony. He told me I could call him Jack. I never could as he was Mr. Leshner.
Last summer he and I attended a five class reunion and I was up early in the lobby. Mr. Leshner came down and we had a most pleasant one hour conversation.
He leaves a legacy of grace and warmth to all the lives he touched..
My sincere condolences to his loving daughters. He was so proud of you all.

Mr. Leshner was a towering figure of a teacher: erudite, passionate, engaged and engaging. He brought energy, curiosity, imagination and depth to teaching history. He was also a model of integrity, decency, community service and grace.
I recall that my grandfather, Benjamin Cosor, longtime FCS board chair, thought Jack was the star of the very fine FCHS teachers, and that my parents admired and respected him.
It was characteristically generous of him to attend the 50Th reunion of the class of 1968.

My sincere condolences to Jack’s family. ‘Mr. Leshner’ was one of my favorite teachers at FCS. He brought history alive. He made learning meaningful and credible. He was a real mensch. His acting in the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop was equal to that of Broadway and Hollywood stars. I remember seeing him in “All My Sons” at FCS in the early 1960’s. It made a lasting impression on me as an actor in the raw! May warm and nurturing memories help sustain Jack’s family now and always. With love from an adoring student, Richard M.
