MONTICELLO, NY
Doris Davis of Monticello passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 in her sleep at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, NY. She was 97 1/2 years young.
She was loved by all who knew her. She was born on October 9, 1907 in Salem, Mass the daughter of Harry & Bessie Newhouse.
After coming to New York she owned one of the largest beauty parlors in Brooklyn, during World War II, later she managed a number of fine restaurants in New York City. During the summers she lived on a 40ft cabin cruiser in Gerritsen Beach at the Cadet yacht club. She was a wonderful cook and fisher lady.
While on vacation 1964 she went fishing with her husband a caught a 79lb Halibut on 15lb test line in a 15foot row boat. It took her two and half hours to land the biggest halibut ever. The Governor of Massachusetts gave her a signed certificate for taking this Prized Halibut.
In her later years she worked at Kaplans Deli in Monticello with her daughter Bess Davis, who owned the famous deli. In her 80s Doris was a volunteer at the soup kitchen and put in over 3400 hours a year. She loved helping the people who came in everyday, and is still remembered by them today.
Doris is survived by her loving daughter, Bess who spent everyday with Doris for the 15years. Doris was the last surviving sibling of her, sister; Goldie Simon and her two brothers Al and Max Newhouse.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
