Obituary of Philip H Walter
Philip Walter
January 28, 1938-November 2, 2008
Monticello, NY
Philip Walter entered into rest on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at his home with his family by his side. He was 70.
Phil was born on January 28, 1938 in Hartford, CT to the late Frank Walter and Elizabeth Lemkin Walter.
An entrepreneur for many years, Phil owned and operated Playland Arcade also fondly referred to as The Penny Arcade where countless families visiting the Catskills would spend many hours playing games of skill such as SkeeBall and Pokerino saving their coupons to win the big prize while having their fortune told by Grandma, the fortune telling machine. Generations of people would stand there waiting with anticipation for that strip of four black and white photos to drop into the chute they had taken in the photo booth at Playland. Those little photos are cherished by many as a reminder of their youth and happier times. He was also the owner and operator of Just Fun & Just Fun 2 in the Orange Plaza Mall in Middletown. An avid golfer, Phil was always proud of his hole in one.
Those who knew Phil always knew that not only did he appreciate a good joke, but would be sure to lift your spirits with a joke or two of his own. Phil would confuse a countless number of children with one simple question: If a chicken and a half costs a penny and a half, how much is two chickens? Referencing again those who were always saving their Playland coupons for the big prize.for his family, Phil was the big prize. To remember and eulogize Phil the best, take a moment and tell someone a joke.
He is survived by his children, Ira Walter(Aimee), Michelle Sheerer(James), David Walter(Cynthia) and Jeffrey Walter(Michele). He was adored by his loving grandchildren, Rachael, Alyson, Amanda, Emily, Tiffany, Alex and Andrew. His sister Gloria Murphy(Joseph) of Ringwood, NJ and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Phil was also a cousin of the late Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term Genocide, and was successful in having it recognized internationally as a crime against humanity.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Tuesday November 4, 2008 at 11am in the Brotherhood Cemetery Thompson Rd. Monticello.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Philips name to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties 800 Stonybrook Court Newburgh, NY.
