Obituary of Abraham Novogrodsky
Abe Novogrodsky, 98, formerly of Glen Wild, the son of Simon and Hannah Novogrodsky, has passed away in Miami, FL, at the age of 98. Abe was the husband of the late Sadie Jaffe, the companion of the late Lillian Fine and a dear friend of Harriett Fox.
Abe was born in New York City to his Jewish immigrant parents on June 17, 1912. Abe was the fourth child in a family of five children. Joe, his youngest brother, passed away at age 80; his brothers, Sol and Irving, lived to 99 and 97 respectively. Abe's sister, Esther, passed away this past summer at age 100.
Abe believed Judaism offered a guide to how to lead an ethical, worthwhile life he demonstrated this belief daily.
Abe married Sadie Jaffe of Glen Wild, in 1936. He became a poultry farmer, working with Sadie's brothers on a family farm in Glen Wild, Sullivan County.
In 1949, Abe moved with Sadie and his two young sons, Eugene and Charles, to Miami, FL. Abe and Sadie made a full life in Miami, participating in the community and raising their sons to be respectful of people and mindful of education. For the last 14 years following Sadie's death he lived with his dear friends, Fred and Joyce Perlove, in his Miami home.
In the course of his many years in Miami, Abe worked consecutively in his own chicken business, as a food industry manager, as a hotel clerk and as a minyan facilitator of daily services at Beth David Synagogue. Abe was a much respected and loved member of the Beth David Community for over 50 years. He was also a member of Congregation Anshei Glen Wild, and during many summers in Sullivan County, he attended and assisted with services at the Crescent Hill Synagogue in Rock Hill.
Abe will be remembered in many ways as a hard worker who respected people's work and community contributions; as a friend to many people without regard to rank or social status and as a great baseball fan, thrilled that his beloved San Francisco Giants won the 2010 World Series.
Abe's passing will be mourned by children: Eugene Novogrodsky (Ruth Wagner), Charles Novogrodsky (Myra Novogrodsky), Nancy Slate; grandchildren: Noah Novogrodsky (Isa Helfgott), Tobias Novogrodsky (Tessa Colthoff), Sarah Novogrodsky (Dan Losen), Miriam Novogrodsky; his great-grandchildren: Gabriel Goldfarb, Sadie Goldfarb, Sam Losen, Lenny Losen, Ruby Novogrodsky, David Novogrodsky and Boaz Max Novogrodsky, as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children in the U. S., Canada and Israel.
A Burial and Graveside Service will be held at the Congregation Anshei Glen Wild Cemetery, Marsh Road, Glen Wild, on Friday, November 12, at noon.
Donations in Abe's memory may be made to Beth David Congregation, 2625 Southwest 3rd Ave., Miami, FL 33129. In Canada the family would appreciate donations to Facing History and Ourselves, 19 Madison Ave., Toronto, Ontario M5R2S2.
Memorial contributions may also be made to the Landfield Ave. Synagogue, Monticello, NY 12701.
