Herman J. Abel died February, 22, 2011, in Boynton Beach, Florida. He was 95 years old. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, moved to Ellenville N.Y. with his family when he was still young, attended NYU and achieved a B.A. in business with a major in accounting. Mr. Abel served in the US Army as a supply officer in Marseilles, France during the Second World War. After the war, he worked in his family business, Abel's Mattresses and Furniture, which was originally located on Canal St. in Ellenville and relocated to Route 209.
When he returned from the war he married Manea Ehrlichman, and they were happily married for 52 years, before she predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his younger sister Evelyn. He is survived by his two sons, Ira Abel, of New York City and Alfred Abel of Philadelphia, his granddaughter, Madeline, and his life-companion Dr. Doris Rome of Bolton Landing, N.Y. and Delray Beach, Florida.
In the 1970's, when Honeymoon resorts were becoming popular in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania, Mr. Abel moved his business there, and was instrumental in making the Pocono honeymoon resorts what they are today. He interpreted architectural designs, found suppliers to create heart-shaped furniture, round beds, swimming pools, bright red dcor and love themed fabrics and furnishings. His funeral will be held at 1:00pm, today, Thursday, February 24, at the Ezrath Israel Cemetery on US Route 209, Wawarsing, NY. Contributions can be made to the Congregation Ezrath Israel, in his honor in lieu of flowers. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home of Ellenville.
