Leah Karasik, a longtime resident of the area, and a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2011, in Delray Beach, Florida. She was 92.
The daughter of the late Martin and Miriam Juskovitz, Leah was born on April 24, 1919 in Czechoslovakia.
She will be remembered for her independence even to the end of her long life, she was an avid bowler, and member and Past President of the ladies auxiliary of the Jewish War Veterans, and was active in many local charities. The "Balabusta", Leah was known for her prowess for entertainment and cooking, to all of her friends and family.
Leah is survived by her children, Marilyn Portnoy, & her husband Fred, of Highland Beach, FL, Alan Cain, & his wife Uma, of Marin Co., CA, & Paul Karasik, of Manhattan Beach, CA; Her sister, Elaine Robinson, of Bayonne, NJ; grandchildren, David Portnoy, Cara Miller, & her husband Rick, Kabir Cain, & his wife Nikki, Sky Karasik, & Star Karasik, Michael Diesmone; great-grandchildren, Kailash Cain, Bodhi Cain, Sage Cain, Alex Miller, & Hank Miller;
As well as her local relatives, Steve Karasik & his wife Mona, Shaun Karasik, & his wife Sara, Lee Karasik, Jay Karasik, Jessica Karasik, & Billy Resnick, & his wife Patsy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Nathan Karasik, her daughter, Nancy Diesmone & her sister, Serena Weinberger.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 10, at 12:00pm, at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Burial will follow at the Landfield Avenue Synagogue Cemetery in Monticello.
