Obituary of Dr. Abraham Lewis Katzowitz, DO

Dr. Abraham Lewis Katzowitz, died peacefully in his home on May 29, 2015, in Clinton Twp, Michigan. Lew was surrounded by his loving family and friends during his final days. His brilliant mind, generous heart, gentle spirit and witty humor will be forever missed by all that knew him. Born on February 7, 1927, in New York City, New York, he was the son of Pearl and Sam Katzowitz. Lew practiced medicine in Mt Clemens, Mi where he specialized in both internal and nuclear medicine, and was one of the original board members of Mt Clemens General Hospital (now McLaren Macomb Hospital). Lew served as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine from 1976 to 2009. He founded the hospital’s Department of Nuclear Medicine in 1965. More recently he took a leadership role in raising funds for the hospital’s Medical Education Auditorium and served as Auditorium Chair. Lew fully retired in May of 2014. He was an avid collector of antiques. He also donated his time to the Macomb County Mounted Police unit and spent his spare time on the golf course. Lew is survived by long term companion Karen Burtle, his children Tami Dobbs, Michael Katzowitz, Naomi Katzowitz, Victoria Nunnely, Kim Federico and 6 grand children. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday June 2, 2015, at 11:00AM at the Joesph N. Garlick Funeral Home Inc, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY 12701. Burial will follow in the Workmen’s Circle #281 Cemetery, Marsh Rd. Glen Wild.
