It was back in the late 50's, I think that Milt and I got to know each other a little bit. Probably because we were both living and working in the Ellenville area, and kept bumping into each other while we were both young and single at the time. He was a really nice guy and I enjoyed those times. I soon was transferred to Washington and those days ended, as we went our separate ways. You have my condolences. Wilma, the "Woodbourne Gang" was always special. from the time we started 1st grade until graduation we were always special. Although most of us have moved to other areas we are still that small gang from Woodbourne. I will always remember the times I shared with you and Milt at your apartment just off Rt 52. Pizza & soda (beer?)
You and the girls are in our thoughts. Paul

Milt was one super principal who assisted me to become a guidance counsellor to his "children" at ECS. Milt helped me so much both professionally and personally. When he retired, the school seemed to lose its "oomph" - not as much of a great place to be anymore. I know the staff felt this way and the children missed him too. God has taken a great man home to himself - I am so sorry for your loss.

I knew Milt through working as a Guidance Counsellor at ECS - he was a terrific principal and friend. His guidance to me helped in so many areas of life - b ot professionally and personally. After Milt retired and moved to Texas, the school seemed to be a less fun place to be - he gave the school and its staff lifeblood. He must have been a wonderful husband and father...I am sorry for your loss; a good man has gone to his final home. May God help you in your sorrow to see the great parts of Milt...

Marty and I hope that the memories of your beloved Milt will help you to overcome this tragedy. Of all the people I have known and do know, he was one that was true blue. He certainly didn't deserve what life brought him at the end. He touched too many lives and was one of a kind. A lot of people will not forget him . I am one of those people. Our deepest sympathy.

Dear Wilma and Family,
Please accept my most sincere condolences on your loss. Milt "Mr. Lachterman" was one of a kind- I remember him as a basketball player at Ellenville High School in the 40's and then as my Boss as Principal of the Ellenville Elementary School for many years after that.
There was never a time that he didn't take the part of his teachers- He was always there for the faculty -always...we knew we could go to him with any concern and he would listen and help to resolve whatever the problem might be. He knew that for the children to learn- the faculty had to be contented. He created harmony like no other Principal could ever hope to do. My many years of working for him and with him were the best of my teaching career.
His wonderful sense of humor helped to save many a day- I have missed him these past few years and only regret that his retirement years weren't filled with the excellent health and happiness which he so deserved.
Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers especially at this very sad time.
He will never be forgotten.
God Bless You,
Sincerely,
Marilyn Fleck

Dear Wilhema and family,
We were very saddened to hear of your untimely loss. We shared many moments with Milt, some of them serious, some of them humerous.
Milt wqas always a gentleman. Gentle not only in nature, but in outlook. His one vice was cars. If anyone on staff acquired a new car, you can bet that within a half-hour Milt was out in the school parking lot inspecting the vehicle.
We came to know Milt over the years as an affable, easy-going family man with a wonderful sense of humor.
Although many years have passed and our families have relocated to other places, we often recall past events. Milt touched many lives and will be fondly remembered. When we retired in the same year, it was truly the end of an era.
May you and your family know of no further sorrow for many, many years to come.

Additional comments:
It was actually August 1971, not 1967, when I met Milt.
Milt was also an "encourager" when times were difficult for the teachers. During my first year of teaching when there were many challenges, he talked to me, encouraging me to stay with it, do my best, and all would work out. He was right as proven by my many years teaching in Ellenville until my retirement in 2004. Thank you, Milt!

Wilma, Reni, Michelle, Jamie and families,
I am so sorry to read about your loss. I have many fond memories of Jamie and I going to your house afterschool and getting dinner ready for Milt so that he could go to work. Then we were lucky enough to be neighbors for a short while. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
Love, Deb, Howard, and our daughter Victoria, too

Special condolences to Wilma and the "girls". Milt will always be a part of your life, through the special memories of times shared.
My first memory of Milt was in August 1967, when he interviewed me (He was assistant principal at the time, soon to be principal) for a teaching position in the Ellenville Elementary School. After talking with me, he said "you're hired" and then called the principal (who was due to retire that fall). A couple of days later, the photographer from a local newspaper took a picture of Milt with another teacher and me. (I have the clipping...a special memory.)
From then on, I had a special connection with him during the time he was my "boss" at the school. There was no question when I was married, almost 25 years ago, that I would invite him and Wilma to my wedding. In spite of a terrible snowstorm and extreme cold, they journeyed from Woodbourne to Newburgh to attend.
He was always a concerned person; easy to talk to if there was a personal/family problem (i.e death in the family, personal illness)with an upbeat personality.
I remember his Western outfit; the Western shirt, jeans, and boots. He was always dressed to perfection.
Though I haven't seen him in many years, the special memories linger on.
